From
the 12th Annual report on the Mound
Explorations of the Bureau of Ethnology, by Cyrus Thomas.
Published in 1894, this rare map is
often removed from the original publication.
A list of
earthworks was compiled to aid in the construction of
archaeological maps for the general report and was
then published in 1891 as Bulletin 12 of the Bureau of
American Ethnology, "Catalogue of Prehistoric Works East
of the Rocky Mountains" by Cyrus Thomas. This list,
along with information from additional fieldwork, formed the basis for the construction of this map.
Although the
actual tile of the map is "Distribution of Mounds in the
Eastern United States" it also illustrates mounds
as far west of the Mississippi River as North and South
Dakota.
Printed on an
offset press, the semi-gloss finish paper is coated on both
sides, 18" x 24". |
